Touch -a- Truck!

In the name of full disclosure I did not go to touch-a-truck with the bigs and Daddy this year. I think I have PTSD from accomplishing such a feat last year in my very pregnant state. As you might expect, an activity designed for young children to touch real life machinery is a big hit around here...or so we thought it would be. Like everything else, when my children returned home all they could talk about was "the popcorn!, the bounce house, and the face painting". Mind you I make popcorn upon request, we own a bounce house of our very own, and I have been known to paint a few faces. *sigh* All that matters is that they had a great time!

The three biggest "truck-related" hits were a tow truck with the bed raised (so that they could run up and down repeated?!?! Clearly there were NO mothers there! haha), the book-mobile, and the limo!

Our Tribute to the Winter Olympics!

Sledding with toddlers!

I've been meaning to post these pictures all week! Last Sunday we took the kids sledding at a small hill perfect for our pint sized kiddos. Specially, we went to the elementary school that both Matt and I attended, (cue happy sighing), it is SO wonderful to be home. In a twist that no one saw coming Ben actually did not like sledding one bit and Lily LOVED it. Ben was happy to wander around at the bottom of the hill alone like a total weirdo, so in the end everyone was happy.

Favorite quote of the day, "I only went splat one time!"

Obviously in front of the dumpster was the perfect place for a sibling pic!
Ben's one and only 'go' of the day
Snow bunny (blurry i know)
Happier to be a spectator
About to be fed up by all of the pictures in 5, 4, 3...
Ben trying to race us to the bottom
You can almost hear the giggles
Like I said, such a odd duck!
Ridin' Solo
SPLAT
Future Olympian!
Such a potato!
I could just eat him up!

Mommy's day out!

If you have been paying attention then you probably missed yesterday's post. On the twentieth day of my twenty one day blogging streak I didn't post. Oops, I doubt anyone but me really cares, if you even noticed at all, haha.

Yesterday was such a great day but I got home late and Matt wasn't feeling well, before I knew it we had gone to bed. We always go to bed together, have I ever mentioned that? I don't know if that is common or not. Admittedly, it is usually me who wants to go to bed before Matt and more often than not he sits in bed and works long after I have fallen asleep.  I don't like to go to bed alone and the clickety clack of his typing doesn't bother me one bit. Anyway, when he wanted to go to bed before 10 last night I figured I owed him one.

Wednesdays are "work from home" days for Matt. We all woke up yesterday feeling off. I am definitely coming down with Lily's cold. Matt on the other hand seems to be fighting off the virus that Ben has. I can't say that I would want it the other way around, but I am definitely the toughest when it comes to being sick so in some ways I wish it was always my turn. I had a doctor's appointment in MA so the plan was to leave the kids with Matt even though he was working and just let them run wild all day. We knew it wasn't a great plan but Matt's mom is in Florida and she is our most flexible midweek babysitter extraordinaire.

I had originally thought that my appointment wasn't until 2 but when I double checked I realized that my ultrasound was scheduled for 12:30. Unfortunately for Dingle that meant that I had to leave Maine around 10:30 and that Daddy Daycare had been extended by 2 hours.

It was frigid yesterday and parts of MA had gotten quite a bit of snow the day before so I left a few minutes early just to make sure that I had plenty of time. The drive was easy, the roads were fine, and I made it to our old neighborhood in about an hour and a half. Since I was early I popped into CVS to get a thank you card for one of our old neighbors who had sent the kids some gifts at Christmas. I  arrived at the OB's office at about 12:10 fully prepared to wait at least a half hour but figured I would have time to write out the card and goof around on my phone.

The receptionist informed me that they had a ton of preemptive cancellations due to the storm so the appointments were wide open. Less than five minutes later the ultrasound tech came out to get me. My u/s went great. That baby is measuring right on track. It took the tech a long time to take her neck measurement (nuchal fold) but I didn't mind one bit because it meant more screen time. I cried like a baby again and I was very sorry that Matt couldn't be there. Baby's heartbeat is now 149, down from 164, so wive's tale says boy but we'll see.

After my u/s I got to see my doc right away. Blood pressure was good, weight gain was a reasonable 2 lbs, and my OB was happy to hear that overall I have been feeling better. We won't know until my next appointment if the iron supplements are really working but he seemed encouraged by my increase in energy, slight as it may be. Next it was off to the lab. I had my blood drawn for the first of the quad screen tests and got my long overdue flu shot. When everything was said and done I was finished at the doctor's by 1:15, almost two hours early. I had dinner plans at 5:30 so I had a lot of time to kill.

I filled out the thank you card and dropped it off at the neighbor's, did a slow drive by of the old house, and decided to got get my nails done. I got a leisurely mani/pedi (in a great dark purple color) and read a magazine. Afterward I was craving something sweet so I went across the street to Panera for a hot chocolate but school had just let out and the place was packed with hungry teenagers. I decided that it was no place to relax and decided to make the drive towards the Boston area (where I was meeting my friend for dinner) to beat the traffic and figured I could do a little shopping. Of course I came home with 50 dollars worth of clothes for the kids and nothing for myself. Old Navy is having a huge clearance sale in case you are interested!

I can't even begin to tell you how amazing it was to have a full afternoon of leisure. The nails, the magazines, the shopping alone. Oh my goodness. I felt totally guilty but not because Matt was with the kids, more that he was supposed to be working a regular day and he wasn't feeling well. I know I say that I am going to make more time for myself but I never do. I learned something yesterday though. I don't just want an hour to get my nails done and then rush back to the kids, that isn't relaxing. What I need is so much time that I run out of things to do and want to go home, which by 4pm yesterday was totally the case. Don't get me wrong I was thrilled to go out to dinner and like I said, stayed too late (which is always the case) but as far as getting a break from the kids I was ready to go back. I don't expect four hour blocks of time to fall into my lap with any regularity but I bet I could make it happen again with a little planning!

Huge shout out to my amazing husband who worked a full day, held down the fort, and battled a stomach bug all so that I could have some alone time. I owe you one babe!

American Idol 2027

Lily has been going to Music Together (aka music class) since January. After some of the bizarre behavior she has exhibited in other "classes" we have taken, I threw any and all expectations out the window. On the first day of class my kookie little odd ball, who on more than one occasion spent the better part of gym class dancing in the corner alone, marched into the room like she owned the place. She then proceeded to greet each child loudly and overly enthusiastically. The other mothers must have thought she (and I by extension) was nuts.

For the past 9 weeks we have been singing our hearts out on Tuesday mornings. Some weeks were better than others. There were definitely moments when she refused to participate, but overall she is totally into it. Class comes with a CD to listen to at home and in the car. Personally I don't mind most of the songs, but there are a few Lily hates for whatever reason, and we always have to skip those ones. Like most toddlers repetition is her best friend, and there are a few songs we always have to listen to twice...or ten times.

Admittedly, I feel like I total wanker during class. Trust me, to have fun at music class you have to check your pride at the door. Lily's love for the whole silly thing is totally infectious. She talks about music class for three days before class and for several days after. Hands down the curtest thing though is when Matt and I catch her singing to herself in her playroom or over the baby monitor. Naturally she gets half the words wrong but the singing just goes on and on. In typical toddler-double-standard terms Lily has no tolerance for mommy not knowing all of the words to every song, right this minute! Lucky for me I have always had a crazy affinity for reciting lyrics, and I was able to learn most of the 22 songs within the first week or so.

About two weeks into class Lily and I were sitting on the couch and she was requesting songs from her personal jukebox. I was unabashedly botching the second verse of some song when she looked up and me and said, "sneaking around", i.e. the missing words to the second verse. I don't outright brag about my kiddo very often, but there is just no denying she has an ear for all things musical. You should watch her dance and clap her hand in time. Matt is incredibly musical and can play at least four different instruments, but unfortunately he can't sing to save his life. Seriously, it is bad. I can carry a tune alright but only barely played the clarinet for a few years in middle school.

I would be over the moon if it turns out this little girl can sing. Even if she only ever sings to me.

A trip to the fair!

After Lily's 18 month appointment on Monday we spent the afternoon at the Topsfield Fair. As a kid I looked forward to the Cumberland County Fair every year so I was really excited to start the tradition with our own family.

The weather on Monday was perfect for an afternoon outside. We started out with some lunch (pizza!) and a visit to the ducks. After lunch we scoped out some rides and decided to take Lily on her first ever Merry-Go-Round. She was a little unsure what to make of the peeling and chipped faces of the tired horses, but once we settled on one and I got on with her, she was ready to ride!

After our trip "round and round" we walked through the fair's many animal barns. They had a free petting zoo, which was almost more excitement than my tot could handle. She has no fear and did not hesitate even once about sticking her hands up to the goats, miniature horses, and sheep for some slobbery kisses. It is hard to say which animals were her favorite, she loves them all. We finished out the afternoon with another ride on the Merry -Go-Round and a fried dough. I think the fried dough may have been everyone's favorite part!

We're goin' to the zoo, zoo, zoo...

and you can come too, too, too!

Every single Saturday Dingle says to me, "what do you want to do today?" My response is always the same, "Nothing. Everywhere will be super crowded because it's the weekend." So every weekend we stick close to home or visit with friends but rarely do we go on an outing. Every single weekend we always say, "why didn't we think to do _____ during the week?"

So Thursday I said to my lovely husband, "I want to do something tomorrow, as a family!" I called the library to find out what passes were available (they are often reserved weeks in advance) and much to my delight the zoo pass had a cancellation, yay! So this morning, in the drizzle (maybe why there was a cancellation, hmmm), we went to the zoo. Normally tickets are 13 dollars/adult, whoa...this is a small zoo we're talking about. But with the library pass we got in for 4 bucks, plus a 1 dollar donation so that Lily could get a sticker...that's how they get you.

The zoo is exactly what you might expect from a small New England zoo. Mostly local animals, a petting zoo, a playground, and a few "exotic" animals that look like they know they drew the short straw and ended up here. Lily had a great time, we all did for that matter. She was more interested in the other kids running around than trying to spot 1/8 of the leopard's tail...behind that rock...over there...where?...there!, but that is ok, I liked looking for the leopard. She liked the bears, the petting zoo, and the big slide at the playground. We of course got a picture with her (nick)namesake! It was definitely 5 bucks worth of fun, let's not forget there was a sticker!!

Did you spot the sticker? She is holding it in nearly every photo!
